Hormonal Abnormalities & Depression

The hormonal system that regulates the body’s response to stress, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, is overactive in many patients with depression, and NIMH researchers are investigating whether this phenomenon contributes to the development of the illness.
The hypothalamus, the brain region responsible for managing hormone release from glands throughout the body, increases production of a substance called corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) when a threat to physical or psychological well-being is detected.Elevated levels and effects of CRF lead to increased hormone secretion by the pituitary and adrenal glands which prepares the body for defensive action. The body’s responses include reduced appetite, decreased sex drive, and heightened alertness.
NIMH research suggests that persistent over activation of this hormonal system may lay the groundwork for depression.
The elevated CRF levels detectable in depressed patients are reduced by treatment with antidepressant drugs or ECT, and this reduction corresponds to improvement in depressive symptoms.
Scientists are investigating how and whether the hormonal research findings fit together with the discoveries from genetics research and monoamine studies.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein gonadotropin secreted by the anterior pituitary in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is released by the hypothalamus. The same pituitary cell also secretes luteinizing hormone (LH), another gonadotropin. FSH and LH are composed of alpha and beta subunits. The specific beta subunit confers the unique biologic activity. FSH and LH bind to receptors in the testis and ovary and regulate gonadal function by promoting sex steroid production and gametogenesis.
In men, LH stimulates testosterone production from the interstitial cells of the testes (Leydig cells). FSH stimulates testicular growth and enhances the production of an androgen-binding protein by the Sertoli cells, which are a component of the testicular tubule necessary for sustaining the maturing sperm cell. This androgen-binding protein causes high local concentrations of testosterone near the sperm, an essential factor in the development
of normal spermatogenesis. Sertoli cells, under the influence of androgens, also secrete inhibin, a polypeptide, which may help to locally regulate spermatogenesis. Hence, maturation of spermatozoa requires FSH and LH.
In women, LH stimulates estrogen and progesterone production from the ovary. A surge of LH in the mid menstrual cycle is responsible for ovulation, and continued LH secretion subsequently stimulates the corpus luteum to produce progesterone. Development of the ovarian follicle is largely under FSH control, and the secretion of estrogen from this follicle is dependent on FSH and LH. The granulose cells of the ovary secrete inhibin, which plays a role in cellular differentiation.
FSH and LH secretion are affected by a negative feedback from sex steroids. Inhibin also has a negative feedback on FSH selectively. High-dose testosterone or estrogen therapy suppresses FSH and LH. Primary gonadal failure in men and women leads to high levels of FSH and LH, except in selective destruction of testicular tubules with subsequent elevation of only FSH, as in Sertoli-cell-only syndrome. Similarly, any process leading to a low FSH level also simultaneously results in a low LH level, except in rare instances of isolated
FSH deficiency or isolated LH deficiency in fertile eunuch syndrome.

What is Hormonal Imbalance?
Hormones play a vital role in every woman’s health and well-being. Very often when women are in a bad mood, you will find that they, or their partners, blame it on their hormones. When hormone levels fluctuate, this can affect your mood, sexual desire, fertility and ovulation. In other words, the imbalance of hormones may impact negatively on how your reproductive system responds.
Every month, the female hormones estrogen and progesterone are produced.
When estrogen and progesterone levels do not balance, this may have a dramatic effect on your health. The gonadotrophin releasing hormone, also affects the functioning of the hypothalamus which in turn affects the pituitary gland, which then affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus.
The imbalance of estrogen hormones can also cause menopause and all the symptoms associated with it. These hormones are influenced by certain factors such as nutrition, diet, lifestyle, exercise, stress, emotions, age and ovulation.
Diagnosing Hormonal Imbalance
There are trained specialists such as obstetricians, gynecologists and reproductive endocrinologists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal imbalance and abnormalities.
Treatment options depend on the individual’s overall health, the type of hormonal imbalance and the severity of the fertility condition. For instance, a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber may be recommended. In addition, those who are suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) may be treated with ovulation medications such as clomiphene (Clomid) while estrogen cream may be prescribed for cervical mucus irregularities.
Confikama Capsule Benefits
Confikama Capsule is believed to work by increasing the levels of all four of the brain’s natural “feel good” neurotransmitters. By providing all natural boosts to serotonin, dopamine, nor epinephrine, the ingredients of Confikama Capsule can help you feel a sense of joy, calm and happiness.
The brain produces natural chemical messengers called neurotransmitters that send messages from one nerve cell to another. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” neurotransmitter because it plays a vital role in regulating mood. Low levels of serotonin can cause excessive feelings of sadness and anxiety.
The other two vital neurotransmitters, dopamine and nor epinephrine also affect mood. When the brain doesn’t produce enough dopamine or nor epinephrine, you feel tired, unmotivated and foggy-headed.
By working synergistically together to boost the activity of serotonin, nor epinephrine, dopamine, Confikama Capsule’s natural ingredients help improve mood and restore emotional balance.

Relaxation and Meditation
The patient must also learn the art of relaxation and meditation which will go a long way in curing depression. He must gain control over his nervous system and channelise his mental and emotional energies into restful activities. This can be achieved by ensuring sufficient rest and sleep under quiet conditions. Meditation will help create a balance in the nervous system. This will enable the hormonal glands to return to a correct state of hormonal balance and thereby overcome the feeling of depression.
